Hair Extensions
New to Hair Extensions? Read on...
We tend to believe we are so modern, innovative, trendy, leaders of fashion, and of course followers of fashion. Well I suppose we may be in some cases. Was it not Victoria Beckham who we all imitated and followed by the onslaught to salons booking for hair extensions? It was quite hard to secure an appointment for hair extensions during that period as every "Posh, Wag" wannabe were booking their appointments for nail and hair extensions.
Next came the bob, now the hair extension salons could see their revenue dropping with this new cut, but no, many clients still came flooding through the doors for the Vidal Sassoon, come, Posh bob. However many of these girls had problems to get the "right look?" Perhaps their sides were not long or thick enough as was Victora's case. So it was hair extensions again.
Then she Victoria, had her short pixie cut, how long before we all chop ours off, hate it and book for those long luxurious locks again. Like our skirt lengths the hair is short, long, short long in an endless cycle to mirror our mood swings and be those trendsetters and or followers of fashion.
In actual fact we are not so trendy after all. As, back in the year 51B.C. Cleopatra was born. In the year 69B.C. Cleopatra was crowned Queen of Egypt. It is said, she was the most beautiful and glamorous woman ever to reign over this land.
Cleopatra now being romantically pursued by Mark Antony was on a mission to keep her beauty and feminine allure. Hence the birth of hair extensions. It is said she would cut bit's off her hand maidens hair and stick it to her own using secret mixtures of mud's taken from the River Nile. Of course similarly she would use Henna collected from the plants beside the Nile to colour her hair, use for makeup and her famous tattoos. Which makes us think if Cleopatra was the "inventor" of hair extensions, all those thousands of years ago, we are misguided in thinking we are so innovative, credit where credits due. That is to Cleopatra.
So today in the 21st century here we go again on that forever turning wheel long or short? Short or long?
Hair extensions now or later! When and where? And NOW!!
Consultation For Hair Extensions.
When booking a consultation, you should already have done some homework. Decided on a reputable salon that specialises in hair extensions and make your appointment.
Next you would need to consider style and what you require to gain from hair extensions. You should also make a list of any questions you may have regarding the style, type of hair to be used, longevity and aftercare of your new hair extensions.
At the appointment be as open as possible. Be realistic in what length, style and colour will suit your face and body shape, age and lifestyle. Be realistic in the aftercare, hair extensions can take some considerable extra time to maintain and style. Listen to the advice given to you by the hair extension technician. Also consider the price, is this to be a one off? Or are you a dedicated wearer of hair extensions?
Once you are completely happy and confident and that all your questions are answered go ahead and book your appointment to have your hair extensions fitted.
Your Appointment to Have Your Hair Extensions Fitted
- Your hair will be washed/clarified to remove any build up of products.
- Your scalp will need examining once again at this point, ensuring the hair is well bedded and strong within the follicle enabling your hair to take that bit extra weight of the new hair extensions, without compromising your own hair.
- Now your hair will be checked for any unwanted weight lines you may have. You may require some cutting of your own hair at this point so the new hair extensions blend with your own hair leaving a natural finish.
- Your hair is next dried thoroughly.
- The hair extensions are now checked for colour match and texture.
- Your new hair extension application is now ready to begin.
- The hair is sectioned and clipped.
- Small v shaped sections are taken ready to accept the new hair extension. Approximately the same amount of hair extension hair as the receiving hair is drawn from the hair mat.
- The hair extension then has hot glue applied to it, (of course this is when using the hot glue bonding method of hair extensions). Then the hair extension is connected to the clients receiving hair.
- This process is repeated on individual sections throughout the head.
- Positioning and amounts of the hair extensions fitted will depend on client's own hair length and thickness and the final required density length and style.
- Your new hair extensions are now ready for blending, cutting and styling.
- At this stage ensure you are completely happy with your chosen look of hair extension and fully understand completely the aftercare of these hair extensions.
Hair Extension Aftercare
- Do not wash your hair for 48 hours after having your hair extensions fitted.
- Always brush your hair, (with the hair extension brush recommended by your technician) prior to shampooing. Support the joins with your hands and brush carefully through from points to midlengths to scalp.
- Tips for washing your new hair extensions.
- Using the recommended shampoo and conditioner for your hair extensions.
- If possible stand in the shower to wash your hair extensions, leaving the lengths of hair down at all times.
- Wet your hair, apply the shampoo to your hands and then over your scalp. Massage your scalp gently keeping the lengths of your hair down at all times, stroke downwards the lengths of the hair extensions minimising the risk of matting.
- Next rinse. Repeat the shampoo process.
- Now rinse the hair really well, not forgetting the amount of extra hair you now have with your hair extensions.
- Apply your conditioner/moisture to the mid lengths and ends and to your own hair on top avoiding the scalp.(Please remember for the care of your scalp hair extensions or not, one should never apply conditioner directly onto the scalp).
- Leave for 2-3minuites put your fingers carefully through the hair at this time to remove tangles or brush carefully.
- Then rinse. Squeeze the extra moisture from your hair, wrap in a towel and place over your shoulder.
- Brush your hair supporting the joins to remove any tangles.
- With a warm hairdryer dry the hair extensions and style, ensuring the bonds/joins are completely 100% dry.
- Ensure you separate your hair extensions regularly especially when they have been in a while. This means, should 2 extensions become joined together because of your natural hair fall, the shed hair is joined by glue leaving the root end free to "wander" to the next bond and tie the 2 together. You must pull these apart ensuring that every bond/join is independent to itself and not joining another hair extension. Thus minimising risk of matting.
- It is also recommended to tie or plait your hair extensions when going to bed.
- For holidays and swimming it is recommended you tie your hair extensions up. When sunbathing let the hair down to dry the bonds/joins, when you return to your room wash and dry as recommended.
- Finally enjoy your new hair extensions, take your technicians advise with follow up appointments ensuring your hair extensions are well maintained and look fabulous throughout their time.
Types of Hair Extensions Available
There are many types of hair extensions available on the market today and we are sure to see many more systems in the future. Hair extensions are thankfully here to stay. We can all have it now! the look we want when we want it. Some hair extension systems are better for certain hair types or for the client's individual requirements. Whilst other types of hair extension systems may be preferred by the technician or indeed learned by that technician. Most hair extensions systems are great but remember the tool is as good as the operator using it. Your decision together with your hair extension specialist will be to decide which hair extension system will meet with all your requirements.
- Hot glue/bonded method using a glue gun and bulk hair, allows for the hair extension technician using all her skills to match and blend the colour herself. This system is fabulous but requires strict aftercare in that complete drying of the bonds must follow shampooing. Fantastic and natural Hair Extensions!!
- Pre bonded hair extensions. Again this hair extension system is great but the same aftercare rules apply as to the hot glue method. Fabulous Hair Extensions for That Look!!
- Link hair extension system. This hair extension system is connected to your own hair by little metal rings. The hair may be bought pre linked so correct colours must be bought. Or the hair extension technician can use bulk hair and blend the hair herself then apply the links. This is yet another great hair extension system and the joins/links do not require drying. Great Hair Extensions!! Only dry to style. Lots more Freedom!
- Mini flat weft pre taped method of hair extensions.
These are great for a very short period of time, say a weekend event or a special one of occasion. This hair extension system will only last for perhaps a couple of weeks. But a fun way to try or enjoy very temporary long hair. Hair Extensions Grrreat Fun!!
- Clip Ins. Again a temporary way of using hair extensions but fun to, add for colour or and length, when and where you want. Hair Extensions FAB !! D.I.Y.!! Clip in and go. !!
- Sewn in Weft hair extensions or weaves. This hair extension system has been used mainly in the Afro Caribbean world, however becoming increasingly popular by Europeans. Normally the hair would be cane rowed against the scalp, followed by sewing the weaves onto these plaits. Very effective for a great and different image. Unlimited choice of colour style and length.
Only dry to style. Hair Extensions Great!!
- Glued Wefted hair extensions or weaves. This hair extension system is executed with the same hair as the sewn in weaves but instead of sewing one would use cold glue. This system is also very effective however does not require drying. Should you wish to dry for the benefit of styling use a cool setting on the hairdryer. Hair Extensions FANTASTIC!! and CONVENIENT!!
- Fibre hair extensions these can be of a natural look or go crazy with funky colours. They can be attached with either bonding or plaiting. Inexpensive fun, mad and very effective. Hair Extensions GO WILD!!
There are different "Brand" names for each hair extension system, and many more hair extension systems on the market all great with different advantages, however, please be discerning any hair extension system is only as good as the technician using it.
Hopefully we have clarified some questions you may have had regarding the different types of hair extensions. Also that we have given you an insight to some of what is available today, and what fabulous opportunities to have the look you want when you want it.
Types of Hair Extension Hair Available
As well as all these different hair extension systems we have equally different types of hair. Consideration must be taken into account the client's hair type.
- Are we trying to match for a natural look?
- Are we trying to make a statement?
- Is the hair fine, thick, coarse, straight, wavy, or curly?
- What colour has the client?
- Is it natural will it fade in the sun?
- Will the client's hair be strong enough to take the extra weight of the hair extensions?
Now let us move on to some of the different types of hair available for hair extensions.
Bulk Hair
this is a term used for any hair type that has not been pre joined at the root area.
Russian Hair
A very scarce commodity, completely natural in colour, (meaning very few colours available), however all can be blended and mixed by the experienced hair extension technician giving a multitude of variations.
This luxury hair would be either straight or have varying degrees of natural movement.
This hair is fabulous sourced in Eastern Europe, of premium quality and natural in colour. This hair type is usually strong, healthy and glossy, a real pleasure to work with when fitting and styling hair extensions. This fabulously conditioned hair is possibly due to culture factors in as much as dietary nutrition is healthy with natural whole foods full of vitamins and minerals essential for healthy skin and hair, also the fact that there is less or no expensive processed foods yielding often no more than excessive sugar/starch and salt.
This Russian hair is extremely expensive but may be reused time and time again, as long as it remains long enough, as each time you reuse it you have to cut the bond off and then cut the style in once again.
European or Euro Hair
Usually available as bulk hair in an endless coloured rainbow spectrum. This type of hair extension hair comes with some movement and is completely versatile to style either straight or with some curl.
This Euro hair has normally been coloured to order so will always be easy to blend and match the clients own hair especially when we experience much colour fade in the summer. The client can easily continue with her colour applications in the salon between visits to have her hair extensions maintained.
Also fabulous hair, nice and strong healthy and is probably the most used and versatile hair available for hair extensions.
This European hair may be reused time and time again as long as it remains long enough, as each time you reuse it you have to cut the bond off, then re cut to style afterwards.
Asian and or Remy Hair
This hair type may be bought in wefted or bulk form. It can also be pre bonded or pre linked. It is often the hair ready prepared for many different forms of hair extensions
The hair can be completely straight, with a soft natural wave or deep tight curl.
The hair usually has had its cuticle removed to minimise tangling.
This type of hair used for hair extensions is perhaps the most versatile where different hair extension systems are concerned; however the hair itself started its life straight and black. There for it has been heavily processed. It has been stripped of colour, then re coloured to the desired colour and then in some cases it is also curled. All of these chemical processes may leave the hair damaged and dry. However these treatments are executed very skilfully minimizing many harmful effects. So the hair will leave the factories in good condition to be used confidently for hair extensions. The textures and versatility of all the different types and colours available make this hair type an affordable and good choice.
The hair is not normally reusable however its price reflects it being disposable after use. It also requires specialist products, as recommended by your hair extension technician. As long as these contradictions are adhered to there should be no problems wearing this type of hair extensions just lot's of pleasure. Enjoy!
